Frankie’s Journey Chapter 2

by

I grew up in the city of La Puente in California. My family has always been very important to me. I enjoy watching soccer with my dad and my grandfather. Our favorite team is the Mexican National Team.

I have a sister who is younger by thirteen months. We always grew up close, and are each other’s best friend. We did everything at the same time; like learning to walk. We enjoyed watching the show Blue’s Clues together. My mom would dress us up very similar with the same hair and clothes.

I started preschool at the age of three. I had a great teacher, her name was Miss Tess. Miss Darlene was the assistant to the class. They would always look after me, and were very hands on. Miss Tess knew right away that I would be a really good student.

On my third birthday we had a big Barney party, I had my first seizure. My family thought it might have been from the excitement from the balloons and all of the people. After that, I started to sing to myself, and walked going to the side. My eyes would start to twitch and become cross-eyed. My mom would hold me until I fell asleep. I would get seizures once a year after my birthday, always at the same time. I would get seizures at the beginning of December.

At the age of five my mom took me to the hospital. The doctors and nurses thought I was overdosing on medication. But, they did not understand why I would keep talking if I was overdosing.  After taking tests, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. The doctors apologized to my mom about mistakenly thinking it was an overdose. I stayed at the hospital three days to run tests and see doctors. I went to see a specialist and they told my mom that I have a cyst on the right side of my head that is filled with water. The cyst causes seizures. They are unable to drain it. The doctors were surprised that I had not gotten a seizure until the age of three. The growing spurts is also the cause of the seizures. The seizures only occurred at night when I was younger. Not even the seizures were going to stop me from having a good childhood.
