WATER ALERTS

Do Not Drink Order

Eaton Fire Evacuated Areas of Pasadena Water and Power water system is potentially impacted with debris and elevated turbidity

DO NOT DRINK YOUR WATER IN THE EVACUATED AREAS

Failure to follow this advisory could result in illness

Debris and elevated turbidity from the Eaton Fire potentially impacted Pasadena Water and Power’s (PWP) drinking water system in the Eaton Fire evacuated areas. The State Water Resources Control Board, Pasadena Public Health Department, and Pasadena Water and Power Water System are advising residents of Pasadena to NOT USE THE TAP WATER FOR DRINKING AND COOKING IN THE IMPACTED AREAS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

What should I do?

  • DO NOT DRINK YOUR TAP WATER—USE ONLY BOTTLED WATER. Bottled water should be used for all drinking (including baby formula and juice), brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice and food preparation until further notice. This also applies to pets and domestic animals.
  • DO NOT TRY AND TREAT THE WATER YOURSELF. Boiling, freezing, filtering, adding chlorine or other disinfectants, or letting water stand will not make the water safe

Notice will be provided when tests show that the water is safe again. The expected timeframe for resolution is unknown and dependent on evolving fire, wind, and related conditions.

Pasadena Public Health Declares Local Health Emergency Due to Impacts of Eaton Fire

PASADENA, Calif. — Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) Acting Health Officer, Dr. Parveen Kaur, has declared a local public health emergency due to the widespread impacts of Eaton Fire, including the presence of ash and particulate matter in the air throughout the community.

Ash and debris pose a significant potential current and future risk to health, safety, and the environment. PPHD is declaring a local health emergency to ensure residents take appropriate measures to protect themselves from toxic ash and debris, as well as proactively positioning the city to access County, State, and Federal resources and programs that will be critical to the rebuilding process.

PPHD is distributing free personal protective equipment (PPE) to those impacted by the Eaton Fire at 450 N. Lake Ave., in conjunction with Pasadena Water and Power Department’s bottled water distribution site, starting Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025. PPE will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on the PPE distribution site, read Pasadena Public Health Department’s press release.

The use of power air blowers, including leaf blowers, is prohibited until further notice to help protect the health and wellbeing of residents. These devices stir up ash and particulate matter into the air, further worsening air quality and increasing health risks for everyone and their pets, particularly for those with respiratory conditions, older adults, children, and other vulnerable populations. For more information on safety precautions and ash exposure prevention, read the Pasadena Public Health Department press release.

Asbestos Exposure

As wildfires sweep through Southern California (https://www.asbestos.com/news/2025/01/10/raging-california-wildfires-may-spread-toxic-asbestos/), many people face the threat of asbestos exposure. Older buildings, especially those constructed before 1980, often contain asbestos, which can become airborne when fires destroy these structures. Dry conditions and strong winds further spread the hazardous fibers, putting individuals at risk even far from the fire.

Inhaling asbestos can cause serious health problems, including respiratory diseases and cancers like mesothelioma (https://www.asbestos.com/mesothelioma/). Health experts emphasize the need for precautions such as wearing respirators and using air purifiers to minimize exposure. Additionally, safely handling fire-damaged debris is crucial to prevent inhaling asbestos particles. Learn more at Asbestos.com.
